What Is Medicare Supplement Insurance?

Medicare Supplement Insurance plans are designed to help fill gaps in Original Medicare and are sold by private insurance companies. Original Medicare pays for some, but not all, of the cost for covered health care services and supplies. A Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) policy could help you pay for some of the remaining health care costs such as copayments, coinsurance, or deductibles.

Who is eligible for Medicare Supplement Insurance?
Anyone who is covered under both Medicare Parts A and B is eligible for Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) coverage.
When can I buy a Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) policy?
The right time to buy a Medigap policy is the 6-month Open Enrollment Period that starts the first day of the month you are 65 or older and enrolled in Part B.
